March 2018

(To see our previous posts, view the links in "Behind Us")

03-25-18 We are home in Suffield! We will be here for about a month and then we head for Colorado for the summer. We are looking forward to seeing everyone here in Suffield. Thank you for following us for the first part of The Big Adventure! We will be posting updates starting in late April when we leave for Colorado.

03-24-18 Last night we stayed in the parking lot of the Giant Grocery Store just off Rt. 81 in Pennsylvania. We had stopped for gass at their station and asked if it was OK to stay the night. It was open for 24 hours and we felt very safe and secure. Also, a cup of coffee was available first thing before we got back on the road. Thank you Giant!

03-22-18 Dan and Allyson picked us up today and took us to New Bern for lunch and shopping. It was great! We had a lovely time and a terrific lunch. We shopped at a nice hardware store, stuffed with every kind of item you could possibly want. Allyson, can you send me a copy of the picture Dan took of you, Bob and me? I'll post it here.

Tomorrow we start to head for home. I figure we will get to Maryland before we stop for the night. I checked for campgrounds, but most are closed until April 1 or very expensive. We will probably just stay at a Walmart or Flying J.

03-19-18 Today we travelled to Clayton, NC. Although it was supposed to be raining, there were only a few light showers and the trip was good. We are staying at Coopers Campground. It is very spacious, with lots of open area. Most campers seem to be permanent residents but the facility is very clean and neat.

Our adventure just changed! We will be spending the summer in Colorado! We just accepted a work camping position at a campground called Diamond Campground and RV Par in Woodland Park, outside of Pikes Peak. Our first shift will be on May 14. We were hired as a couple, with Bob doing maintenance and me doing office work. We will work together on a two day on, four day off, three day on, four day off schedule. That will give us plenty of time to explore Colorado on our time off. In return, we will receive a campsite for free and a small hourly wage.

So, we will be heading back to Suffield this Friday, probably arriving on Sunday or Monday. That will give us a chance to get ready for Colorado.

03-18-18 We went to Charleston, SC today. We took a tour of historic Charleston. Our tour guide is a retired history teacher who was very informative!

03-16-18 Today we had a Segway tour of Savannah, GA, and it was great! This photo was taken on Jones Street. It is the most expensive real estate in the city. You've heard the phrase "Keeping up with the Jones?" Well, this is where it comes from. People in Savannah tried to keep up with the residents on Jones Street.

The home of Jim Williams, owner of the house made famous in the book and movie called "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Jim shot and killed a local male prostitute in the front room appearing in this photo on the right. It's a pretty good book. Photo by Ray Christie, our tour guide of Segway of Savannah.

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, and it is a huge holiday here in Savannah. Who knew? The fountains are dyed green and the crowds are huge. Roads are being blocked off for the big parade and it's getting tough to move around the city. We had planned to stay after the segway tour for dinner, but decided to get out fast!

03-14-18 We arrived in Yemassee, South Carolina this afternoon after a five hour, uneventfull drive from St. Augustine. We are staying at Points South KOA. We will be scheduling a tour of Charleston tomorrow or the day after.

03-11-18 We had breakfast this morning with a couple named Damian and Beth from New York. They are full-time campers, and are going to Orlando to do campground maintenance for a place in Orlando in exchange for a free camp site and and salary. They told us about an internet site called Workamping.com where campgrounds all over the country advertise for camping in exchange for camp sites. They are all different, and some pay in addition. They often look for couples with experienced in maintenance and office work. Sounds like a match for me and Bob! We may consider this in the future.

03-10-18 Today we took a tour of St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. We went to Ripley's Believe It, or Not museum. This is the first one. Ripley's acquired Marilyn Monroe's "Happy Birthday" dress for $4.8 million dollars. It was on display here in St. Augustines. Here is a picture.

03-09-18 Yesterday we left Lake Worth Florida and travelled to St. Augustine.

Art, this is for you. While we were in West Palm Beach, someone fell off their motorcycle just around the corner from the Segway office. Bob and I, of course, had to go look. (Emergency services people are the biggest Looky-loos around.) Anyway, we couldn't get over the size of the ambulance. We know you will want to consider one of these for the next new ambulance. Can't imagine how we get along without a four-door cab.

Then, today when we were out, we came across this paramedic response vehicle in St. Augustine. You really need to get one of these for Laura. I don't know how Suffield has gotten along without one all these years. Obviously better than the paramedic fly car.

03-06-18 Today we went on a two hour segway tour around West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. It was a blast!

We also spent a little time on Lake Worth Beach. There was no swimming allowed, as the surf was high due to the Northeaster heading for New England.

Last Wednesday, I suddenly felt something that felt like a piece of sand in my eye. We were leaving Key Largo, and as soon as we arrived in Lake Worth, I went to a walk-in-care center to get it out. They thought they got it out and I left. As soon as the numbing medication wore off, I thought it was still there. I gave it a day and then went to the ER at the hospital across from the campground. They saw something embedded in my cornea, but couldn't get it out. They referred me to an ophthalmologist in Palm Beach since there wasn't one at the hospital over the weekend. So, this morning, I got up early and drove to Palm Beach to make sure I was their first visit of the day. Unfortunately, that doctor isn't there any more and they didn't have a doctor coming into the office. They suggested I go to another one of their offices in Lake Worth. What? Come to find out, their main office is right next to the hospital, directly across from the park that we are camping in! *#@(&$^%$))#@*&$!!!! So, we jumped in the truck and drove BACK to Lake Worth where they found a stitch from my cataract surgery that had worked its way partially out. They quickly plucked it out and I went on my way. I was really afraid that they would tell me they didn't want to touch my eye with my history of retina detachments and tell me to see my regular ophthalmologist. Whew!

03-04-18 We are in Lake Worth Florida at John Prince Park Campground. It is a municipal campground that is very nice. Many people spend the winter months here. There are almost 300 camp sites here, with shower facilities sprinkled throughout. Many of the campers are from Quebec. Yesterday, we went for a walk on a city beach. The air was 78 degrees and the water 76 degrees. Heaven.

I've been in contact with Ron Borgio and Suzanne Sussman and we are going to get together for lunch next week! Looking forward to seeing them.
